Tecnicamente, Microsoft ha spostato i supernodi di Skype su server proprietari molto potenti, piuttosto che mantenerli distribuiti come sono stati finora.
Grazie all'hardware proprietario, Microsoft può quindi gestire tutti i flussi di comunicazione che passano attraverso questi supernodi, diminuendone al contempo il numero grazie alla potenza di calcolo dedicata.
Di fatto in questo modo Redmond ridefinito la parte "P2P" dell'architettura di Skype, che assieme a sistemi di criptazione avanzati rendeva il sistema immune da intercettazioni.
Da Microsoft smentiscono ogni ipotesi di velleità di controllo, specificando in un comunicato che lo spostamento dei server è un'operazione da interpretare esclusivamente nell'ottica di un miglioramento del servizio.
Ma i dubbi tra la comunità tecnica rimangono, perché Microsoft è proprietaria delle chiavi di decrittazione, e il traffico di Skype è ora centralizzato. In poche parole, potenzialmente monitorabile.

But doubts remain among the technical community, because Microsoft owns the decryption keys, and the traffic of Skype is now centralized. In short, potentially trackable.
