Quando è fatta una configurazione desktop di Windows 7, molti amministratori IT inizialmente per non perdere tempo scelgono la configurazione standard con le relative opzioni di default e successivamente, a causa d’incombenze più urgenti, non si ha più il tempo di esaminare l'elenco dei benefici ottenibili con le opzioni disponibili effettuando la configurazione nella modalità non standard. Tale approccio è il più diffuso anche perché si basa sull’assunzione che l’installazione standard comprenda tutte le funzioni essenziali disponibili per un normale ambiente operativo.
Questo non sempre è vero, specialmente quando l'ambiente è complesso.

Window TIFF IFilter: il servizio esegue un riconoscimento ottico dei caratteri presenti all’interno dei file TIFF così che il testo contenuto possa essere indicizzato. Microsoft ha disattivato questa funzione di default in quanto parecchio intensiva sotto il profilo delle risorse di sistema consumate. Molto utile comunque se l’utente dispone di parecchi file in questo formato.
